Visual SCL for IEC 61850-6

ASE’s Visual SCL is a graphical tool that allows the creation, editing and viewing of IEC 61850 SCL files without requiring knowledge of the underlying XML syntax. This allows the user to concentrate on the engineering process as opposed to XML syntax. IEC 61850-6 Visual SCL can be used for SAS functional specification ( SSD files ), IED capability description ( ICD files ), as well as SA system description ( SCD files ). Visual SCL contains high level graphical editing tools for the Substation, IED, and Communication models as well as a Data Template editor.

What is SCL?

SCL is an acronym for Substation Configuration Language, the configuration description language for communication in electrical substations related to IEDs as defined by IEC 61850-6. IEC 61850 is the international standard for substation automation systems. It defines the communication between devices in the substation and the related system requirements. It supports all substation automation functions and their engineering.

IEC 61850-6 is the sub-part of the IEC 61850 series that specifies a common file format for describing the communication related IED configurations and IED parameters. SCL defines a format capable of describing the engineering of a substation automation system.

A system specification in terms of a single line diagram.

IED capability files.

Substation automation system description.

According to IEC 61850 every IED must have a self-description IED Capability Description ( ICD ) file. The role of the system integrator is to import the ICD for each device to create a file called Substation Configuration Description ( SCD ). This file completely defines the configuration and settings for the substation automation system. The information in this file is written back into the respective devices.

Why ASE Visual SCL?

SCL is based on the Extensible Markup Language ( XML ) version 1.0 and defined by a schema contained in the IEC 61850-6 specification. Although SCL are text files and thus can be viewed and edited with any text editor, this approach requires a fairly deep understanding of XML and the SCL schema.

ASE’s Visual SCL is a tool that provides capability for the creation, editing and viewing of SCL files without requiring knowledge of the underlying XML syntax. This allows the user to concentrate on the engineering process as opposed to XML syntax

Visual SCL can be used for SAS System Specification Description ( SSD files ), IED Capability Description ( ICD files ), as well as SA system description or Substation Configuration Description ( SCD files ). In addition support is available for Configured IED Description ( CID Files ).

Visual SCL contains graphical editing tools that allow the user to operate on SCL objects as opposed to XML syntax.
