About Applied Systems Engineering

Applied Systems Engineering Inc., (ASE) is a Smart Grid protocol technology leader and a leading manufacturer of RTU/SCADA/IED protocol test sets. We also provide Substation and DER Gateways, Protocol Translators, substation alarm annunciators, terminal servers, modems, and consulting services. Based in Campbell, California, ASE has developed market-leading protocol test sets supporting more than 80+ protocols. ASE was founded in 1982 and in late 2014, became part of Kalkitech, a provider of Smart Grid optimization and communication solutions.

What we do

We make Protocol Test Sets. Our ASE2000 RTU/SCADA Test Set and ASE61850 Relay/IED Test Set are the market leader used by technicians and utilities the world over. We make Protocol Gateways for Substation and DER Applications. We connect substations and DER's to SCADA Control Centers and Cloud Applications. We also manufacture Substation Annunciators and Bell 202 Modems

WHO WE ARE

Company Overview

ASE is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kalkitech. Kalkitech enables the digital transformation of utilities and renewables. Kalkitech solutions enable customers to implement mission-critical applications from the edge to the data center or cloud. We invest extensively in research and development in several areas, including power systems engineering, thermal engineering, control theory and communication, and information technology, to build cutting-edge standards-based solutions and products. In 2014, Kalkitech acquired ASE, a protocol technology leader and a leading manufacturer of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)/Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) protocol test equipment for the SCADA Industry. ASE has developed market-leading substation protocol test sets for more than 100 substation and industrial protocols. ASE has since launched ASE61850 the market leading IEC 61850 Protocol Test Set, ASE61850 SCL Manager, the Substation Configuration Tool and Rule 21 / IEEE 2030.5 DER Gateway and Aggregator for telemetry interconnection of renewables to Utilities.

Prasanth Gopalakrishnan
Founder, President & CEO
Prasanth Gopalakrishnan is the founder and CEO of Kalkitech. He founded Kalkitech in May 1998 with a vision to make it a technology leader in the field of energy optimization and communication solutions. Over the years, he has assembled a strong management team and top engineering talent to establish Kalkitech as a specialized technology solutions provider for the energy industry. Prasanth has more than 22 years of experience in communication systems research and product development. His areas of specialization include standards-based communication and optimization technology in the energy and utility space. He is a member of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) LITD 10. Prasanth holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University.

George Punnoose
Executive Vice President & COO
George Punnoose is responsible for the company’s overall operations. He has more than 34 years of experience in the power industry. Prior to joining Kalkitech, George worked at Easun Reyrolle Limited for 11 years where he last served as President – India Business and was instrumental in growing it from Rs. 40 crores to Rs. 250 crores. Prior to that, he worked for 16 years at ABB where he last served as Head of Technology of the Utility Automation business unit and was responsible for the introduction of Digital Protection Relays in Indian Markets. George holds a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Kerala University.

Vanishree Gururaj
Executive Vice President & CFO
Vani Shree Gururaj joined Kalkitech as Chief Financial Officer in January 2013. She has more than 20 years of experience working with multi-national companies and large Public Sector Enterprises. Vani’s areas of expertise include business process improvement, mergers, and acquisition advisory and corporate restructuring. Prior to joining Kalkitech, she was a Finance Controller for the Healthcare Sector (R&D) at Philips India Pvt. Ltd. for two years. She started her career working at B. P. Rao and Company and has worked at several companies including Motorola India Pvt. Ltd. She is a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

Sushil Cherian
Co-Founder and Vice President – Power Generation
Sushil Cherian is the Co-founder of Kalkitech and has over 22 years of experience in Control and Automation Systems, specifically in the Power and Oil and Gas industries. His areas of specialization include Dynamic Controls, Dynamical Systems and Energetics, and Non-linear Systems. Prior to founding Kalkitech, Sushil worked with ACES Controls in Houston, TX, USA. Sushil holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Cochin University of Science and Technology, in the field of Thermal power plant modeling and simulation.

Jose Thomas
Vice President – Energy IoT
Jose Thomas has held various positions at Kalkitech over 20 years period, the most recent being VP Product Management for Kalkitech’s flagship product line. He is responsible for charting the entire product road-map. His areas of specialization include SCADA, Communication Protocols, RTU/IED, and SCADA-IT application integration. His industry affiliations include Member of IEC TC-57 WG-13 and WG-16, Secretary of Working Group on Common Information Models (IEC-61970, 61968, and 62325) of BIS LITD-10 Committee, Executive Committee Member of IEEE PES- Bangalore Chapter and Member of UCA Users Group. Jose holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Instrumentation and Control Engineering from Calicut University and an M.Sc. in Electrical Power Systems from the University of Manchester.

Johney Varghese
Vice President – Product Engineering Services
Johney Varghese is in charge of Engineering for Kalkitech’s Technology Services Group. He has 22+ years of experience in Implementation Services and IT technologies and extensive experience in managing large projects across verticals. Prior to joining Kalkitech, Johney Varghese worked for Bank of America and Wachovia Corporation in the US (now merged with Wells Fargo) as Vice President handling IT projects in their Corporate Finance Division. Johney holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India.

Vinoo Shankar Warrier
Vice President – ASE R&D
Vinoo Shankar Warrier is responsible for Product R&D at Kalkitech. He has more than 20 years of experience in the Design and Development of complex communication products and integration projects between disparate systems. Vinoo is a member of the DLMS-UA task team that maintains the DLMS/COSEM specifications. He is also a member of IEC-TC57 in the working groups 10, 17, and 18. His chief interests are communication protocols used in the energy sector, participation in standards bodies related to these protocols, and product design. Prior to joining Kalkitech, Vinoo worked for MICO (Bosch) in Bangalore, India. Vinoo holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from National Institute of Technology, Calicut, India.
